Apparently a Golliwogg or as it became known later as a Golliwog was a character created for children’s literature in the 19th century by author Florence Kate Upton. It was a rag doll character that was inspired by a blackface doll that Florence Kate Upton had during her childhood in American.
British Airways was quite upset at Naomi Campbell’s accusations that she was called a golliwog supermodel as they have been under scrutiny with other allegations that their is racism among their staff. Of course, you can’t control everyone under your employ, I think that is obvious and there is no doubt some people that are quite racist and have no problem stating their point of view. I don’t see though how that is always the company’s fault, they can’t edit what is coming out of every employee’s mouth. Sometimes the employees must face the consequnces for their own actions.
Even if Naomi Campbell was acting out because of lost luggage it would seem odd that an employee would chose that time to toss off a phrase like golliwog supermodel. It doesn’t seem like something that would calm the situation down. On the other side of the case though, a golliwog supermodel doesn’t sound like a normal day to day type of speech pattern and could have very well been the thing to send Naomi Campbell off the deep end.
Naomi Campbell has been sentenced to community service and will face a fine for her charge of disorderly conduct. She is also banned from future British Airways flights.
