Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin known as feminists and gay rights activists, plan to become one of the first same-sex couples to legally exchange marriage vows in California more than 55 years after they fell in love. The couple are co-founders of the Daughters of Bilitis which they founded in 1955 in San Francisco as a social club for lesbians.

The ceremony will be officiated by San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom who will oversee the proceedings in a private ceremony of 50 guests in his City Hall Office. Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin were chosen due to their status as gay rights pioneers and in recognition of their long relationship. Del Martin is 87 years old and Phyllis Lyon is 84 years old.

Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin are featured in a documentary by Joan E. Biren called: No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon.
