Update: 6/11 - It has been revealed my the medical examiner’s office that Matthew Sunshine died of accidental alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning. So sad to lose one so young. Everytime I think about whether or not it would be a good idea to lower the legal drinking age I come across instances like this that make me rethink the matter. I remember reading some information about how one of of the benefits of restricting alcohol to a higher age is that young bodies just are not ready or able to process the alcohol the way it can when they are older. Of course, nothing magically changes when they turn 21 but it does allow the body those few extra years of growth and maybe it can handle the alcohol better. My condolances to Matthew Sunshine’s family and friends, so sorry you lost him so young.

Another young college student, Matthew Sunshine, age 19, was found dead in his dormitory room on Tuesday. Matthew S. Sunshine attended Northwestern University and hailed from Cold Spring Harbor, New York. It makes me worry about sending my own children away to college someday as I read so often in the news about the deaths of college students.

Hopefully some additional details will emerge about the student who was enrolled in the School of Education and Social Policy. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. Rest in peace, Matthew Sunshine.

I can’t believe he’s gone. We were in the same orchestra together. He was my stand buddy in band. I got the phonecall last night and I still can’t process this. It’s a shame he went in such a way and so young. He really was determined to make it in the world. I’ll miss him.
