The ever popular Carson Kressley of the the Queer Eye for the Straight guy fame, appears on the Oprah show on Friday, May 31st. Carson is the host of How to Look Good Naked, airing on Lifetime television. Don’t believe anyone that says How to Look Good Naked has been cancelled, in fact season two of the show starts showing in July.

The main premise of the show is to take women that have body image issues (which I think is about 97% of of us!) and show them how they can appreciate their bodies, dress better and ends in a photo shoot of them naked. Read the rest of this entry »

The CEO of Under Armour, Kevin Plank, revealed that ultimate goal of the company is to outsell their apparel category with their shoe sales. They have the confidence that Under Armour can go in and take every shoe category by five to ten percent.

When it comes to cooking a perfect steak, there is a lot to learn. One thing you find out is that there are many different varieties of steak cuts and each one requires a special touch. Buying your standard steak at your regular grocery store probably won’t give you the tenderest cuts. Usually the best quality steaks are available from high quality and speciality butcher shops and stores. Believe it or not, you can even order steak online. But let’s get to the steak of the day, the Tomahawk Steak.

This steak comes to light courtesy of the Bravo TV show, Top Chef - Chicago. One of my favorite shows. It’s down to five chefs now and the first challenge faces the chefs when they are given large slabs of rib racks and told to carve them into individual tomahawk steaks. Then the challenge continues with the guest judge and chef, Rick Tramonto, asks the chefs to cook him the perfect medium-rare steak. Read the rest of this entry »

Wow, there was a lot that went on during the Grey’s Anatomy season finale. I don’t know why they always have to cram so much stuff into the last episode. Sometimes it almost makes me not want to come back the next year. I’d prefer that they just focus on one or two basic storylines and really develop them. Make you care about the characters so that when the new season rolls around you are eager to watch to see how those storylines turned out.

In the Grey’s Anatomy season finale it took 2 hours to go from grim to grim. To be honest this may be one show that I give up watching. Part of it may be because I’m from the Puget Sound area and so much of it doesn’t ring true to me. Don’t you hate that when they film a show where you live and you spend the whole time going “that isn’t true, nope, no - they don’t really do that here” and so on? For instance there is a line in the Grey’s Anatomy episode that says: “but this land and ferry boats are who you are!” Seriously, who says that? I don’t know anyone that is that obsessed with ferry boats. And come on people, only a minute portion of the people that live here actually ride them. It is a real pain in the ass to have to commute on the ferries.

And here is another issue I have with Grey’s Anatomy - some of the “traumas” are just so manufactured that they are almost hard to watch. The kid that is stuck in a block of hardening cemet, sucking all of the water out of his body. Really? Too much sometimes. Of course, the doctors have to argue and consult and get all dramatic about it. Half the time I just want to reach through the tv and bop them on the head.

You know, I just don’t have the energy to go on with a recap of the season finale. I’m sure another fan out there can do a much better job than me. I for one and glad this season of Grey’s Anatomy is over!

When you are Sarah Jessica Parker, world famous star of HBO’s “Sex and the City” series, you are known for your sense of fashion and can have almost any designer at your beck and call. So when she decided to star her own fashion line she went the complete opposite direction and produced a line that had a price tag below $10 for each and every item.

Who would be the chosen ones to help her roll out her line? Well, she turned to a couple of guys known as Steve and Barry. Also known as Steve Shore and Barry Prevor, a couple of guys from Long Island who just happen to have built one of the fastest growing empires of fashion in the country and they do it by selling clothes at rock bottom prices.

Every store, every item is less than $10. You would be hard pressed to find prices cheaper than that at Old Navy, the Gap or even your standard mass market retailers such as Wal-Mart of Target. Steve and Barry have them beat by a mile.

Keeping prices low is not only a passion with Steve and Barry, but it is a mission. They don’t advertise, they don’t need to. They do, however, make smart decision about collaborating with celebrities to create their lines and find ways to promote them. Venus Williams, the world famous tennis star, even wears her $10 shoes when she hits the court.

“Fashion is not a luxury” is a philosophy that Steve and Barry live by. They believe families can save thousands of dollars a year by shopping at their stores. In this day and age with prices always rising, being able to buy your clothes at reasonable prices allows you to continue to combat the cost of rising food and gas prices with the extra money in your pocket.

Steve and Barry are honest about the prices their clothes cost to make. If it cost less than $1 to manufacture a pair of jeans, they don’t see the point in trying to sell them for hundreds of times that price. They know they can sell it for $9 and make their profits on the volume of sales versus the retail price of the sale.

They use a world wide network of production facilities in over 20 countries. Monitoring their vendors to make sure they are treating their employees in an appropriate manner.

“It is about something real,” Prevor said. “This is about listening to customers and responding to their demands and they come in and they say, this is a great idea, why isn’t anyone doing that?”

How did they start out? Well for one, they have had a friendship since childhood. Prevor sodl tshirts in college at the flea markets for just $1. In the 80’s they opened their first store and begain selling the licensed collegiate gear for prices lower than the bookstore on campus. In the 90’s they branches out to other colleges but the big change happened 2 years ago.

It started with shoes and kids wanting shoes that were costing in the range of $100 and up. They teamed up with the NBA star Stephan Marbury to create the Starbury.

In order to save those dollars usually spend on traditional advertising, they decided that the backs of celebrities would work well as non traditional billboards.

Apparently it has worked as Steve and Barry now have more than 260 stores and are on a continued upward trend of growth. Even their headquarters in Long Island reflect their desire to keep things on a low cost basis. Even when they travel they fly coach and stay at cheap hotels.

I am so excited for the new Indiana Jones Movie! It comes out in theaters on May 22 and I am plotting and planning on how to get to the theater. Wondering if I can get my son to go to sleep at a friend’s house so his dad and I can get out of the house and see a movie in an actual theater!

I was blown away when I realized that Indiana Jones and The Raiders of The Lost Ark came out in 1981 and Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom came out in 1984. I was in high school. Crazy to think that it was over 25 years ago. I think Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark started my love of action adventure films. Although I have a pretty crummy memory I can still vividly see in my mine the first time in when the giant rolling rock came down towards Indiana Jones and he had to start running. My heart was in my throat even though I knew he had to survive, it was only the beginning of the movie!

The we got the prequel of Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom. Although not as good as the first as I really enjoyed the female lead in that movie, Karen Allen. Something I found interesting was that Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom was one of the catalyst movies that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating system. I can definitely agree that they were probably too intense for the general PG rating but certainly not an R rated movie. As a parent I can appreciate having this additional rating available when making choices about movies for my children.

The great news is the Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens in just 10 more days. I want to see it as soon as possible but I have this thing about sequels, if it has been more than a year since the previous movie I like to go back and watch them all in order again. I need to get my Netflix list going and add the following:

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade
.

How hard can that be to watch 6 hours of Harrison Ford in his prime? I wish my son was a little older because I know he will love the Indiana Jones Movies but I think they would be a little too intense for him right now. Oh well, some day he’ll be able to share my love of movies. Until then, I’ll enjoy the Indiana Jones movies and won’t mind seeing them again when he is old enough.

The massive undercover drug raid of San Diego State University nicknamed, Operation Sudden Fall, took place on the campus Tuesday May 6th resulting in the arrest of almost 100 people, the majority of which were San Diego University Students.

The year long investigation was prompted by the death of a young student in 2007 who died of a lethal combination of cocain and alcohol. The young woman’s name was Jenny Poliakoff who was 19 years old at the time of her death. Her family including parents Ray and Kim Poliakoff and her brother Nate Poliakoff are very supportive of the raid and the resulting arrests.

Although her death was the catalyst for the year long undercover investigation, it was not with the intent of finding her supplier as that had already been done. The person who supplied her with the drugs that resulted in her death has already been convicted.

The numbers are changing with different news reports but remain staggering despite some discrepancies. News organizations agree that San Diego State University has suspended six fraternities at this time. According to one press report 75 of the 96 people arrested are students at SDSU.

The suspended fraternites include Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Mu, Phi Kappa Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Lambda Chi Alpha.

The raids took place at nine different locations. One of the fraternities that was raided was Theta Chi where guns, cocaine, and ecstasy were discovered.

The president of the university, Stephen Weber, noted that all the SDSU students that were arrested were immedietely suspended form the university and any that were residing in campus managed housing were evicted.

Amazingly enough, several of the arrested SDSU students were majoring in fields that you would think would not take them down the path of drug dealing. One student was a criminal justice major who was found with 500 grams of cocaine and several guns. Another student was only one month away from their masters degree in Homeland Security and was also working as an employee of the campus police.

The Drug Enforcement Agency, DEA and the San Diego State University police infiltrated seven fraternities and discovered that almost all the members of the fraternities were aware of the drug dealing.

The students used text messaging as a means to communicate with many of their buyers, including sending out “sale” messages to them.

Some of the evidence recovered included 50 pounds of marijuana, marijuana plants, hash oil, methamphetamine, 4 pounds of cocaine, and prescription drugs. Also included were many different weapons and between $60,000 and $100,000 in cash.
